What is Offshore Transportation & Platform Installation?

Offshore transportation and platform installation refer to the processes involved in safely and efficiently transporting and installing offshore platforms, structures, and associated equipment in the marine environment.
For example, offshore transportation involves loading, transporting, and unloading components from the shore to the designated offshore location. It often requires the use of specialised vessels, such as heavy lift vessels, barges, or crane ships, equipped with lifting and positioning capabilities to handle the size and weight of the components.
On the other hand, onshore platform installation involves the precise positioning and installation of offshore platforms or structures onto seabed or fixed foundations. This process involves piling, lifting, lowering, and securing the platform or structure in its designated location.

Transportation & Installation FAQ

An offshore jacket is a large steel structure that serves as the supporting framework for an offshore platform or structure. It is typically installed in the seabed to provide stability and structural integrity.

In the offshore oil and gas industry, jackets and topsides are integral parts of an offshore platform. Here’s a general overview of the jacket and topside installation process:

  • Design & Fabrication
Both the jacket and topside are carefully designed according to the specific needs and environmental factors such as wave height, wind velocity, current velocity, earthquake, etc. After the design phase, they are fabricated onshore in a shipyard or fabrication facility.

  • Transportation & Installation
After fabrication, they are loaded onto barges and transported to the offshore location where the jacket is installed.

  • Pile Driving
After the jacket is placed in the correct location, piles are driven through the legs of the jacket into the seabed to provide the necessary stability to the jacket structure.

  • Topside Installation
Once the jacket is installed and secured, the topside is installed. This process can be done in several ways, including piece-small, lift-on, float-over, or jack-up and lift methods.

  • Commissioning
Lastly, all the systems on the topside are tested to ensure they are working correctly.

Examples of offshore structures and vessels include:

  • Offshore platforms
  • Floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessels
  • Fixed platforms
  • Floating OCS facilities (FOFs)
  • Floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessels
  • Support vessels (OSVs, lift boats and crew boats)
